Gifted and Talented Education

Welcome to the 2011/2012 school year! I am excited about working with the 4th and 5th grade students at the Gibson School site. The syllabus below will give you an idea of topics that will be covered this year.

G.A.T.E. Program – 2011/2012

2011-12 Syllabus

 Grade 5    

Learning Styles: Students will learn about learning styles and discover their own learning style.

  Creativity: Students will learn about the process of problem finding and inventing. They will also learn about inventors throughout history. Each student will create an original invention that solves a problem and will present it in the classroom Invention Convention.

 Life Science: Students will learn about the anatomy, characteristics and adaptations of squid.  The culminating activity will be squid dissection. 

Computer Lab: Students will have access to the computer lab and learn to do research using the Internet. They will also learn to use Word and Power Point.

Service Learning: Students will participate in a 4 week service education program provided by volunteers from YouthServe Birmingham. The purpose of the fifth grade Service Education Program is to introduce students to the ideas and concepts around social change and the global community. The YouthServe lessons engage the students in understanding their school, community and their unique place in it. The final activity is a service learning project making cards for patients at Children’s Hospital.

Chess:  Students will continue to improve chess skills and strategies. 

Grade 4
Science as Inquiry: Think Like a Scientist. Students will participate in science activities that allow them to set up experiments, collect data, and interpret the results of their experiments. 
Animal Adaptations: Students will learn how physical and behavioral adaptations of birds and fish help them survive in their environments.
