GATE students are understanding what it means to have a “classroom job”, pay bills, and save “play money” for a rainy day! Students applied for classroom jobs such as security officer, administrative manager, attendance coordinator, project collector, sanitation coordinators, or electrical engineer. Each nine weeks students will have different jobs to gain experiences in a variety of ways. Students are paid a “play money salary” once a month. Students must work together in teams to accomplish their jobs in the class. Students will pay the rent, car payment, utilities, insurance payment, groceries, and save some money each month. Students are learning banking terms like balance, overdrawn, and deposit. The economic unit will last all year.
From January thru March, 2012, students will participate in an independent research project on China, Japan and Italy. Students will compare and contrast each country’s culture, population, economics, education and government. Students will utilize several websites to gather information. Students will choose from a variety of options to display and present their information to the class. Students have experienced the Asian and Italian cultures through artwork, music, research on individual student topic choices from each country such as foods, traditions, tea and rice ceremonies, fashions and clothing, economy, geography, sports, transportation, money, architecture, and much more! Students are currently designing and creating a creative poster to display all research
information. To culminate this project, students will be given a fortune cookie (to open and read in class) and a set of chop sticks!
In April and May students will “Think Like an Architect” by learning how to draft their own home design, building a model of a home, and testing the home for durability in a wind tunnel. Students will problem-solve situations that architects face in real life. Mr. Roman Gary, an architect, will be our guest speaker.
